The coal cutting machine (1) travelling above a face conveyor (4) has a rotary cutter (8) turning about a vertical axis. This is supported above one side of the conveyor so that cut material falls directly onto the conveyor. Mounted immediately above the other side of the conveyor is an impact plate (12) forming an integral part of the mining machine. This plate assists breakage of the material, and may be a fixed plate, or can be swung towards or away from the cutting head by a piston and cylinder unit behind. The piston can be operated to swing the plate away to prevent overload. An alternative design has a rotary disc assembly instead of a plate.
