Hydrocarbon fuels esp. diesel fuel with improved combustion - contg. iron salt of aromatic nitro acid and nitro-aliphatic cpd.

Liq. hydrocarbon fuels contain =0.003 (pref. 0.004-0.006) wt.% of a mixt. of (a) an Fe salt of an aromatic nitro acid and (b) a 1-4C nitroaliphatic cpd. The (a) : (b) wt. ratio is 1:10-100 (pref. 1:15-55). Also claimed in an additive for diesel fuel comprising a mixt. of 1 pt. wt. of (a) and 10-100 pts. wt. of (b). Diesel fuels contg. the additives give rise to less pollutant and smoke emission and show little or no tendency to form hard carbon deposits. Locomotives operated with the fuels produce less spark emission. The additives also inhibit microbial slime formation during storage. Component (a) is pref. ferrous picrate (I) and component (b) is pref. 1 - nitropropane (II). The additive can be used in the form of a soln. in isopropanol, butanol, toluene, xylene, mineral oil, fuel oil or an aromatic petroleum fraction.
