The fluidised bed combustor operates so that the fluidising medium and an adjacent air supply are at different velocities. Fluidising medium nozzles (4a) are shorter than the nozzles (46) through which air is supplied and a static bed (14) is formed below the level of the level of the nozzles. Combustible material escaping from the bed and carried towards the outlet from the combustible chamber is returned to the area of lower velocity. The fluidised combustion layer may overlie a lower static layer from which material from the fluidised layer may fall.
