The rotary pump handles fluid containing wear-inducing ingredients being particularly in the form of a centrifugal sewage pump with a seal between housing and impeller shaft. The ring provided on the shaft (2) in the housing at the seal position (4-8) generates a radial rotary fluid shield when running. The vaned ring (11) is mounted on the shaft or the rotary portion of the seal. This imparts a radial movement to the fluid and is accommodated in a cylindrical chamber formed in the housing (1). The vanes on the ring can slope sharply towards the rear.
