The clamp is partic. intended for use on steam generating systems but can be used for any high pressure pipework. A typical application is in pressure chambers in nuclear reactors. The holding element is U-shaped and there is a clearance between it and the pipe. It is fixed by a holding device to the main structure. The material and size of the clamp is chosen so that plastic deformation and absorption of energy when the pipe fractures is allowed for. The holding device consists of U-bolts and clevis pins. There is a baseplate between the clamp and the pipe that serves to hold the pipe together in the event of breakage.
