The rotary magazine for an automated tool change mechanism for a machine tool, has circular plates (71, 72) at regular intervals on an axial shaft (74). The tools (112) are mounted at regular intervals on the periphery of the plates (71, 72) which can each be moved into a transfer position. The system increases the capacity of the magazine without increasing the diameter of the magazine plate. A rotary tool holding spingle (57) mounted on a mobile poppet, operates in conjunction with a mobile double pivoting tool change arm (122). The plates are mounted on a sleeve (73) keyed to slide on the shaft (74), and the shaft is parallel to the spindle. The poppet is mounted on a carriage (7) and the plates can be displaced relative to the carriage (7) and along their support shaft. This latter movement enables either plate to move into the transfer position opposite the tool change arm (122). The sleeve (73) may be displaced by a linear jack and the arm (122) may be mounted on a separate carriage.
