Process is effected using catalyst produced by depositing an organometallic Fe, Co and/or Ni cluster on an inorganic support, (substd.) metal carbonyl clusters being pref. Used for the prodn. of 2-4C olefins. The selectivity is good and only traces of condensn. prods. with =5C are formed. In an example, a catalyst was prepd. by impregnating Al2O3 with a reaction prod. of Fe(CO)5 and pyridine of the formula Fe(C5H5N)6 Fe4(CO)13 . In the reaction of H2 and CO at 10 bar and 360 degrees C, this gave a gas contg. 16 vol.% hydrocarbons, comprising 72.4 wt.% 1-4C paraffins and 27.5 wt.% 2-4C olefins. Little water and no liquid hydrocarbons were formed.
