Building element is made by preparing a finely divided mixt. from a base material contg. SiO2, and effecting a rapid firing to produce partial fusion of the SiO2 grains and consequent intergranular cohesion, then cooling. The base material comprises 80-90% sands, schists or clays. The mixt. is rapidly heated to 1000 degrees C and held for several mins. This rapid firing process is esp. suitable for forming desired architectural shapes in a mould. A wide range of prods. can be made by this technique using raw materials found all over the world. Prodn. lines can be set up rapidly and easily at the site of use of the prods. Thermal energy required can be adapted to the local resources.
