A building material is based on mechanically activated fine silicate-containing material particles. A building material contains -50 wt.% of a silicate-containing material of less than 0.1 mm particle size which has been mechanically pre-activated by washing with coarse particles of more than 0.1 mm particle size. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) production of the above building material; and (ii) a building element produced by the above process and comprising mechanically activated silicate-containing material and binder.
