The arrester gear for bringing an aircraft to rest when alighting on the deck of a carrier, is controlled to ensure that the aircraft is stopped within the required distance without being subjected to an excessive deceleration force. This is achieved by using a wheel, in contact with the deck, which forms a friction drive with a second wheel mounted on a shaft. This shaft drives a centrifugal governor which actuates the servo-valve of the hydraulic system which supplies the braking force to the arrester gear.
