Synthesis gas prodn. using nuclear heat - with carbon di:oxide recycle for conversion to carbon mon:oxide

A plant for synthesis gas prodn. using nuclear heat is claimed. The improvement comprises separating a major proportion of the CO2 from the prod. gas and supplying heat to react this CO2 with carbon to form CO. The plant pref. includes a reactor for steam gasification of coal and/or a reactor for steam reforming of CH4; the sepd. CO2 can be recycled to either or both of these reactors. The amt. of CO2 recycled is pref. controlled so as to maintain the required H2:CO ratio in the product gas. The improvement makes it possible to convert practically all the of feed (coal) into synthesis gas components, giving a product gas with an H2:CO ratio of 1-2.5:1.
