Two pedals (4, 5) are pivoted on a common shaft (8) and can be moved backwards and forwards, to a limited extent and in opposite directions. There is a double free wheel sprockets (9, 10) to rotate the rear wheel spindle. Chains around the sprockets are coupled to respective drive cables, these being trained around pulleys on the seat tube for connection to the pedals.
