Building with external fire-escape elevator

In a method of building, a permanent elevator is constructed first and the building is constructed adjacent the elevator, so that the elevator is an external elevator of the building, the elevator being used to raise the building materials during the construction operation. The elevator may be built entirely before the remainder of the structure or may be built slightly in advance of the various storeys of the building. The elevator may be provided with fire-proof doors which isolate the elevator from the building and/or it may be provided with fire-fighting equipment associated with each floor of the elevator, for example vertically extending pipes for water and/or power which have access at each of the floors of the building.
