PURPOSE:To accomplish the reduction in the number of components required for an anti-skid apparatus to be controlled by arithmetic units such as microcomputer and the minizturization thereof by resolving a problem of assumed vehicle velocity signal in a software manner. CONSTITUTION:An anti-skid apparatus compares an assumed vehicle velocity signal AVv with a wheel velocity signal Vw upon rapid braking. When the difference therebetween exceeds a specified value, the apparatus controls braking force enough to keep the friction coefficient between the wheels and the road surface at the maximum, thus ensuring braking. In an apparatus of this type, all arithmetic unit, such as a microcomputer, adapted to accomplish the above function are arranged to perform a digital signal processing. With such an arrangement, an assumed vehicle velocity in the operation at the moment prior to application of brake is reduced down to specified values every a certain time so that the assumed vehicle velocity signel AVv is obtained by stages. In this manner, the number of components can be reduced, thus miniaturizing the apparatus.
