PURPOSE:To eliminate an analysis error due to sulfur and phosphorus when burning a chlorine-contained sample under an atmosphere of oxygen and analyzing the resulting chlorine by minute coulometric titration, by providing a scrubber pipe filled with cupric oxide in a combustion furnace. CONSTITUTION:When a minute quantity of chlorine contained in petroleum, a petroleum product or the like is analyzed, a sample is picked up by a microsyringe and introduced into a sample reservoir 3 through a sample inlet port 4. The sample reservoir 3 is then moved to the front of the inlet part 7 of a combustion furnace to evaporate the volatile ingredients of the sample. The reservoir 3 is thereafter introduced into a combustion pipe 14 in the inlet part 7 of the furnace so that the sample is burned under an atmosphere of oxygen. Chlorine resulting from the combustion of the sample is conducted to a titration cell 15 through a scrubber pipe 21 which is filled with linear cupric oxide and provided in a chlorine passage part 13. The chlorine is caused to react with silver ions in an electrolyte in the titration cell 15. The decrease in the concentration of the silver ions is prevented by electrolysis. The quantity of consumed electricity is measured to determine the quantity of the chlorine.
