In processing milk, whey or an ultrafiltration permeate to milk prods., e.g. whey powder, lactose or protein concentrate, Ca is removed from the liq. to be processed by means of an acid ion-exchanger in the Na and/or K form, and the ion-exchanger is regenerated by means of the liq. which is obtd. in a later stage of the process. Deposition of Ca phosphate in heat-exchangers is avoided, and the lactose is not contaimined with this cpd. Evapn. can be to a concn. of about 70% instead of the 55% in known processes.
