The inhaler fits in the end of a pump which compresses air to eject the powder via a directional outlet; powder is supplied in a sealed capsule which fits between two telescopically coupled members, spring-loaded apart and fitted with needles which pierce the capsule to release the powder when the two, telescopically coupled members are pushed towards each other. The pump is usually a resiliently-compressible, hand-operated 'bulb', into which the inhaler is reverse-fitted for easy carriage until required to be assembled for duty.
