The compound 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane is recovered in the form of rhombic crystals from a substantially non-crystalline mixture comprising 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, and organic derivatives of the reaction condensation of phenol and acetone, and the phenol by lowering the temperature of the mixture from an elevated temperature to a temperature which is sufficiently low to cause the separation of phenol and 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl ) propane in equimolar proportions as crystalline adduct, for recovery of the adduct, by mixing of the adduct and water has a temperature sufficiently high to completely dilute the adduct, and then by lowering the temperature of the water mixture and the adduct is diluted to cause the separation of 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane in the form of rhombic crystals substantially free of phenol. The crystals are easily manipulated and recovered by filtration or centrifugation, and they can be manufactured into high quality polycarbonate molding resin.
