Preformed coal pellets or briquettes, pref. round or cushion-shaped, are mixed with non-caking fine coal and coked in horizontal or vertical coking ovens. - The preforms are coated with finely-divided iron ore and may be produced on magnetic roller presses using a magnetic iron oxide coating or by hot or cold briquetting with or without a binder. - The product consists of a mixture of coke particles of uniform size and coke breeze, which are reasily separated. - The fine coal fills the cavities between the preforms and greatly reduces the decrease in height of the charge during coking as a result of settling. - Breaking of the preforms during charging or discharging is also reduced
