The spatial scanning method involves an elevationally rotatable radar antenna pattern and corresp. radar system. Rotation in the plane of elevation is achieved by phase control. There is pref. additional azimuth plane rotation, esp. by mechanical methods, in part of or in the whole azimuth range. - The permissible target height measurement error can be defined at will as a function of elevation. During rotation the half width of the polar diagram is varied, at least within a given range of the total elevation range to be scanned, as a function of the instantaneous elevation according to the given error limit.
