The refuse compactor has a loer horizontal baseplate (1) and a support plate connected to it by three vertical columns for accommodating the compacting pressure exerting unit. The refuse accommodating container (24) is placed between these two plates and it is able to swivel about one of the columns (3) and able to slide along this column. One part of the container side wall is used as a door. The container has an octagonal cross section with four wide and four narrower side walls. Compacting is carried out by a hydraulic unit whose piston has a large compacting plate. The pressure exerting unit has an electric motor driven hydraulic pump.
