The scoop wheel excavator has scoops whose positions relative to the wheel can be varied during the rotation of the wheel. The excavator jib is designed as a telescopically extending or retracting jib. The excavator of this type is used for large scale excavation of ground on top of brown coal deposits or for opencast mining of brown coal. Each scoop is adjusted during the rotation into a favourable cutting position for cutting, scooping or for loading. This variation is carried out along the movement arc until its unloading or filling. Finally the scoop bucket is moved on the downwards moving arc. It is moved rapidly into a radial open position and it is then moved back onto cutting position.
