The electrode assembly includes a noble metal cathode protruding from an insulator on which a metal layer is deposited to form a reference electrode. The electrolyte is contained in a sleeve across the lower opening of which two membranes are stretched by a tensioning element. This tensioning element is held by a securing sleeve which itself forms a membrane protecting sleeve. Alternatively the electrolyte container additionally has a membrane protecting sleeve which protrudes out from the membrane. The outer membrane at the lower end of the noble metal cathode. The design of the reference electrode avoids penetration of electrolyte between this electrode and the insulator, thus prolonging the working life. The electrode is also useful for measuring CO2 equilibrium.
