The molten substance is made to vibrate by high-frequency vibration and is caused to flow out from a nozzle with the formation of droplets having a defined size which solidify in free fall. The temperature difference between the nozzle outlet and the ambient temperature, and the cooling rate of the drops formed are set in such a way that the drops, prior to solidifying, attain a spherical shape and then solidify rapidly. The process produces a uniform particle size in a narrow diameter range, combined with a high throughput, and is particularly suitable for preparing spherical pharmaceutical preparations having a depot effect. In this case, the active compound is dissolved or dispersed in the low-melting organic substance acting as the carrier.
