The pipe laying method is used for steel pipes of lengths in excess of 10 m. and involves the individual pipes (3) being lifted one after the other into the trench (2) provided by an excavator located in front of the trench and there joined to the rest of the conduits. The pipes are gripped by the excavator by their front ends in the direction of lay. The excavator (1) grips so that it exerts a torque for lifting and guiding the pipe. This torque is effected either through engagement at two points using traction and pressure or by a rigid clamp (8) connected to the excavator beam.
