The machine excavates a trench underwater, having a rotary ground-loosening tool with scrapers round the periphery discharging into the interior. A suction pipe extracts the mixture of loosened earth and water. The body of the tool (7,8,9) is an oblong drum, shaped to match the profile (14,5) of the trench to be excavated. Where the latter has sloping sides, the drum can have portions diverging from the ends towards the middle, where there is a cylindrical portion.
