The protection cage (10) for use in gymnasia and indoor sports halls for field events in athletics is especially applicable to hammer throwing, shot putting and similar events. The grid like complete cage or part cage (11) includes a lower circular lifting rod (12) connected by pull ropes (14) with a drive to raise or lower the cage. The shape of the rod fitted at the bottom of the cage determines the shape of the cage and is made and shaped in one piece. A carrier which in shape corresponds to that of the lifting rod can be fitted to the upper edge of the cage.
