The emergency travel device has several chains running beneath gearwheels and connected to the bottom of a first connecting element rigidly connected to the wire ropes (20) of the lift. Consequently, the gearwheels can be driven through the main travelling gear and the lift car (1) can move downwards with regard to the first connecting element if an emergency power supply is operated to activate a drop prevention element. A second connecting element on the upper section of the lift car is released from the first connecting element, a main travelling gear brake switch is operated and the car stops between two adjacent floors.
