Diesel engine starting arrangement - has Bendix coupling between starter motor and auxiliary motor which transmits torque through planet reduction gear

The diesel engine can be started by a starter motor (7) or an auxiliary motor (16), individually or in tandem. When the auxiliary motor is to be used, its torque is transmitted to the main shaft (9) of the starter motor through a planet reduction gear (14, 32) and a releaseable coupling (34, 35). The auxiliary motor is started from the starter motor through a Bendix coupling (22, 30) driven by a ratchet gear (25). This gear is in constant axially slidable engagement with a drive (30) of the starter motor, and is coupled to the Bendix coupling through a compression spring (24).
