Simple and complex cpds. of transition metals with the tetrathioquadratic acid dianion of formula (I) are claimed. The cpds. are useful as electrically conductive materials with anisotropic conductivity. Described cpds. include those of formula M2(C4S4)nXm (where M = transition metal, X = Cl, Br or I; n = 1 or 3; m = 0-2), M(C4S4)n/2Xm (where n = 2 or 4), LnM(C4S4)MLn (where n = 1-4 and L is a ligand), LnM(C4S4)MLn 2+2A- (where n = 1-4 and A- is an anion), and LnM(C4S4)MLn 2-2Q+ (where n = 1-4 and Q+ is a cation). The cpds. can be prepd. by reacting a tetrathioquadratic acid salt (pref. C4S4K2, H2O) with a transition metal halide or complex halide.
