The detection system has a measuring chamber with an inlet through which at least a part of the hot water produced passes into the measuring chamber. The measuring chamber has an outlet below the inlet. The outlet has a given cross-section. A float attached to a warning device is located in the measurement chamber. The outlet is designed so that when unacceptably large amounts of mineral deposit are formed in the heater this outlet is reduced in size to an extent that causes a net gain of hot water in the measurement chamber - i.e. more flows into the chamber than flows out so that the float is raised and the warning device operated.
