The clamping mechanism is used for holding cylindrical tubes, particularly as used in a stand. At the end of the tube to be clamped (2) a clamping member (3) is provided having a recess (3'). In this clamping member there is mounted a spindle (5) eccentric to its axis of rotation, and acting as a bearing for a clamping segment. Both member and segment can be of plastics and there can be a spring acting between them, and fitting in bores in both. The eccentricity can be approximately 0.5 mm.
