The device uses a piezoelectric element (2), with the voltage (Um) applied across its electrodes (1). The piezoelectric element (2) acts as the spacer between two parallel light conductors (7, 8). One of these receives light from a collimated source (12) at one end and the intensity of the light (14, 15) received from the other end of both light conductors (7, 8) is used as an indication of the voltage (Um) across the electrodes (1). Pref. each of the light conductors (7, 8) is surrounded by a sleeve (9, 10) of a material which has a relatively low refractive index with is removed where the two light conductors (7, 8) run parallel to one another. The light conductors (7, 8) may be spaced by a layer of immersion fluid (11) with a low-refractive index, coupled to the piezoelectric element at one end.
