The combustion engine has two rows of in-line cylinders in which the cylinders of one row are longitudinally staggered relative to those of the other row. The inlet and exhaust valves of each cylinder are also staggered in longitudinal direction and all valves are operated by a common camshaft via rockers. The centre lines of the valves are at least approximately parallel to the centre lines of the corresponding cylinders. The diameter of the valve springs is preferably smaller at the camshaft end than at the rocker lever end.
