The super imposition of emissions of various wavelengths in a laser resonator unit using an active medium is effected in such a way that the emissions are capable of independent adjustment for optimum conditions. It is intended to achieve a laser transmission wavelength of 16 um. The laser active medium e.g. CO2 gas, is located between a totally reflecting mirror and a partially reflecting mirror. The partially reflecting mirror has a substrate e.g. of Cd. Te, and a dielectric coating selected according to the active laser medium for optimum reflectivity characteristics. Alternatives to this format include a mirror with a dielectric coating on both sides and a unit with double mirrors with coatings of both sides. A final version har a reflected grating behind the mirror.
