A carbon dioxide laser is designed to produce a frequency shifted emission that enables the output power to be in excess of 100W for longer than 1 msec. The active laser gas flows through a channel (1) with resonator mirror (3) inset into one wall and transparent window (5) in the other wall. A chamber (6) is side mounted and contains a partially reflecting resonator mirror (8) two heating elements (9) and a controlled inlet (13). The active carbon dioxide gas flows through the channel at a temperature of 240 deg.F. The inactive carbon dioxide gas is admitted to the side chamber and is heated. The active gas flow passing between the mirror (3) and the window (5) induces a laser emission that interacts with the side chamber. The established resonance produces an emission with a slight frequency shift.
