The brake has an actuating member whose effect is controllable and which, on braking, applies a support with friction lining against a wheel surfce. Between the actuating member and the support is a spring (5), under tension when the brake is functioning, while a stop (34) is provided to limit the movement of the member. The spring can be of the leaf type. To vary the braking effect, the position of the stop can be adjustable in relation to the braking surface, the intervening distance decreasing with increasing vehicle weight.
