The vibration damping assembly is fitted to the wheel (2, 3) and/or the rail of a rail vehicle to increase the frictional adhesion between the contact surfaces of rail and wheel. The damper assembly (8, 9) is tuned relative to the resonance frequency of the wheel rail system. The damper assemblies may be coupled to the wheel or to the rail. They may consist of a number of tongueq-shaped elements tuned to different resonance frequencies of the system, which are embedded in a damping material and fixed (10, 11) to the wheel and/or rail by a common bracket.
