The chopper has an intake device comprising several rollers with horizontal pivot axles. In front of the intake device are two counter rotating pick up pieces slanting towards the ground, and incorporating a separator for the stalks of the standing crop. The separator consists of rotating cutter discs beneath the pick up pieces. The chopper, intake device and pick up pieces are positioned on the same chassis joined to the housing of the forage harvester. The chassis extends crosswise to the direction of travel and has connections for attaching it to the three point linkage of a tractor. In front of the intake device are two guide shoes spaced apart, or wedge shaped metal plates. The inside walls of the guide shoes have strips or plates which are sinusoidal in shape and slope towards the ground. The front end of these guide shoes are pointed.
