The cutter comprises a wheel with cutter-blades, and a horizontal drive shaft. The cutter blades act in conjunction with a counter blade in the shape of an H-shaped cutter-frame. The crop-intake device consists of two intake rollers with a horizontal pivot axle and two pre-compression rollers also with a horizontal pivot axle. In front of the crop-intake device are two conical pick-up devices with a sloping pivot axle and cutter for separating the stalks of the maize plants. Two wedge-shaped guide-shoes guide the maize plants. The cutter and pick-up device are mounted on a chassis crosswise to the direction of travel. The chassis and its housing enclosing it are divided near the cutter-wheel into two parts which pivot outwards on a pivot axle.
