Increasing antibacterial activity of cephalosporin derivs. - by combining with beta lactamase inhibiting penicillanic-S,S-di:oxide

The antibacterial effect of 7-(D-2- 4-ethylpiperazine-2,3-dione-1-carboxamido -2- 4-hydroxyph- enyl acetamido -3-(1-methyl-5-tetrazolyl thiomethyl)-3-deactoxyme- thyl-cephalosporamic acid (I) or its salts, is increased by combining it with a penicillanic-5,5-dioxide of formula (II) or its salts with bases. In the formulae, R1 is H or residue completing an ester which is easily hydrolysed in vivo. (I) is a known antibacterial. (II) are antibacterials and beta-lactamase inhibitors. The mixt. of (I) and (II) are useful esp. against ampicillin resistant strains of E. Coli and Bacteriods spp, and are effective at lower doses than either component individually.
