In a laser telemeter instrument the distances between the various elements is large and this leads to deformation and consequent faults due to axes being misaligned. This is corrected by a optical system which permits the instrument size to be reduced. A laser generator (2) output is reflected into a focal system (3) by a tetrahedral reflector (5) and principal reflector (10) to omit a coherent beam in the transmission direction (4). This beam is diffused by a target and is returned to a receiver (7) with a convergent objective (8). The principal reflector (10) reflects the diffused laser pulses and the visible light to a selective separator (9) for a sighting element (13) and micrometer. The received laser pulses are directed from this element to a photosensitive detector (12). The visible light is directed to an eyepiece (11) on the optical axis.
