PURPOSE:To efficiently recover Ni and Co from sulfide contg. Co and Ni by decomposition by roasting the sulfide so that the Co is converted into sulfate and the Ni is left as sulfide and extracting the roasted product with warm water. CONSTITUTION:Sulfide contg. Co and Ni is fed to a roasting furnace such as a fluidized roasting furnace or a rotary kiln and roasted at 250-450 deg.C under 15- 21% partial pressure of oxygen to convert most of the Co into cobalt sulfate while leaving most of the Ni as sulfide. The roasted product is cooled, dipped in warm water, and slightly agitated to leach an aqueous cobalt sulfate soln., which is then separated from the nondissolved residue. By blowing chlorine into the soln., the cobalt sulfate is recovered as Co(OH)3, and said residue is fed to a nickel purifying process to recover Ni.
