Apparatus for sorting and washing fish on board a vessel, comprises a container (5) having a grid bottom (10) and walls (e.g. 11, 12) sloping down towards said bottom which container (10) is covered by a grid (14) having larger openings than the grid bottom. A discharge conveyor (20) links up with a side of the bottom grid, and spouting means (e.g. 16) are disposed in the container so that cargo poured into the container (10) is forced towards the grid bottom and thence towards the discharge conveyor (20). A waste collecting channel (17, 18) connects with the bottom grid, a horizontal sorting conveyor (23) links up with the discharge conveyor (20), and a waste conveyor (26) links up with the sorting conveyor.
