The nitrogen content of shale oil or a distillate thereof is reduced by catalytic cracking or hydrotreating and contacting the oil with an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid. The treated shale oil can be further processed to obtain a combustion fuel such as diesel fuel, gasoline and turbine fuel.
