The procedure for producing ortho and para-nitrobenzaldehyde from corresponding ortho or para-nitrobenzyl bromide, chloride or tosylate using the formulaIMAGEwhereby the bromine compound can be produced in situ by means of radical bromination of nitrotoluene is unique in that the ortho or para-nitrobenzyl bromide, chloride or tosylate is oxidized while heated and is supplied dimethyl sulfoxide in the amount 1-2 mole per mole nitro compound without solvent until all the dimethyl sulphide formed has been distilled.
