To facilitate the working of saw blades and the like, and for securely holding them and moving them forward in precisely measured steps, a machine is used that is provided with a feed mechanism 15 comprising a slide 18 guided in a rectilinear path, to which is hinged a finger 28 which can be inserted into a gullet of the saw. The finger is provided with a stop piece 32 directed at an angle to its tip 30, which in concert with an angle- shaped element 33 guides the finger into an end position, in which it is secured in the lengthwise centre axis of the slide. The finger, furthermore, is provided with a sideways directed pin 36, which in concert with a stop shoulder 37 in the housing, folds back the finger during the return motion of the slide. The blade 12 is secured by temporarily adjustable jaws 38, 39, of which one 38 has a contact element 46 with fixed parallel position in relation to the blade and the other jaw 39 has a contact element 47 mounted in a socket 48 with partial circular contact surface against the jaw. The socket can move when setting up a blade, but it is then locked by means of screws 50. The feed mechanism 15 and the jaw actuating mechanism 41 are advisedly operated with pressurised fluid, and controlled so that the jaws open at the time when the advancement of the blade is supposed to occur.
