The cobalt is recovered by treating aqueous solutions containing ammonia and cobalt ions with a sufficient amount of an acid in the presence of a catalyst to convert the cobalt ions in a cobalt hexamine ion which is precipitated and separated the resultant solution. According to another aspect of the invention, a cobalt compound is precipitated from an aqueous solution of a halide of hexamine cobalt treating the solution with a metal hydroxide precipitate is then reduced to form a fine cobalt powder .
