A method and sensor for measuring fluid throughout in partially filled pipes or open channels involve multiplying flow speed and flow cross-section signals together. A simple magnet arrangement producing a cycled direct field enables a change-over to be made from an inductive flow speed measurement to an inductive flow cross-section measurement using one sensor. An electromagnetic field alternately produces constant induction flux during the time period and linearly and trapezoidally time-varying flux during the next period. The flow speed is measured during the constant flux period and the cross-section during the varying flus period. The flow speed is measured from the voltage induced in an electrode pair and the cross-section using a conductor loop in the unfilled region.
