The prodn. of natural and/or regenerated cellulose food wrappings which can be stored in a ready-to-fill condition and contain sufficient water and/or glycerol to allow direct processing after storage, comprises heating after water and/or glycerol content absorption but before storage in a sterile pack. Heating can take place by high frequency energy. In a specific embodiment, over-pressure is applied to increase temps. Cellulose wrappings, contg. no internal or external lacquer coatings are heated in a germ-impermeable foil pack which is hermetically sealed only after the air in the wrapping is displaced by the emerging vapours. Process applicn. to glycerol-free wrappings, e.g. sausage skins, contg. 5-100% water, is claimed. The wrappings can be stored without risk of damage by fungi, spores and bacteria. Energy -consumption in sterilising can be reduced, e.g. by 25%.
